Matthew D. Miller brings years of experience in civil litigation and tax controversy to Hendricks Law, P.C. He focuses on representing and advising businesses and individuals at all stages, including tax planning, audits, administrative appeals, trials, appeals, refund suits, collections and bankruptcy.
With impressive breadth and depth of experience, Mr. Miller excels at defending clients facing both domestic and international disputes involving income taxes, payroll taxes, excise taxes, franchise taxes, estate and gift taxes, property taxes, sales and use taxes, and related penalties and interest.
Tax planning is critical to the success of a business, so Mr. Miller also routinely counsels companies on tax planning and issues arising throughout the business life cycle, from formation through dissolution and termination. Although many tax audits or controversies are resolved at the administrative level, Mr. Miller regularly represents taxpayers in court when no administrative settlement can be reached. He has successfully represented clients in US Tax Court, Federal District Courts, US Bankruptcy Court, US Court of Appeals and Superior Court of California, as well as before various state and local taxing authorities.
Mr. Miller has worked in corporate settings as a member of litigation and sales teams, as well as in small-firm settings. Currently, he serves as director of the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic at the Justice & Diversity Center of the Bar Association of San Francisco, one of the largest and most distinguished legal-services providers in San Francisco. The clinic provides pro bono legal representation by top Bay Area tax attorneys for local low-income and ESL communities.
Mr. Miller is a member of Bay Area Lawyers for International Freedom (BALIF) and the Bar Association of San Francisco; he is co-chair of Bay Area Young Tax Lawyers, a standing subcommittee of the Taxation Section of the State Bar of California.
